Umpiring

Junior Umpire Programme (JUMP)

We are proud to run the Junior Umpire (JUMP) programme at Foster Park. This programme supports our junior club members (and anyone else who is keen to join in) to get a whistle in their hand and start umpiring other junior games.

Umpires are an integral part of the game of hockey and we are proud to be providing a sustainable and supportive pathway to upskill our junior club members.

Each week during the winter season, we host the fixtures at Foster Park on behalf of the Canterbury Hockey Association (CHA).

JUMP training sessions are held throughout the season, and we provide a mentor for each game to make sure the Junior Umpire is supported at all times.

If you are interested in joining the JUMP programme, please contact jump@waikirikirihockey.co.nz

FAQs
  • What age can I participate in the JUMP programme? Anyone from school year 6 to Platinum level players can participate. We also need platinum age players and parents to support as "Mentors".
  • Do I have to umpire every week? No, we will schedule JUMP duties when you have a home game (at Foster Park).
  • Will I be on the pitch with no support? No, every game has a "Mentor" on the field with you to make sure you feel supported. it is a very positive and supportive way to learn how to umpire.
  • Why should I participate in the JUMP programme? Umpiring games helps with your understanding of the rules, and helps you to develop your personal game. It is also a great way to get you community service credits up (e.g. for the Duke of Edinburgh award).
